Getting Here

The route from Tokyo

Shinkansen to Iiyama in 110 minutes, then thirty minutes by bus or taxi — 2h 20m, Tokyo Station to the resort.

  1. Leg 1
    1h 50m

    Tokyo Station — Hokuriku Shinkansen

Take a Hakutaka bound for Kanazawa or Tsuruga and get off at Iiyama. From ¥8,360 one way (reserved seat ¥9,090); reserved seats recommended in peak season. Hakutaka 553, leaving Tokyo at 07:52, is the first service with a bus waiting at Iiyama; the earlier 06:28 departure lands before the first connecting bus, so plan on a taxi if you take it.

  2. Connect
    Wait

    Iiyama Station

The Madarao bus leaves from the station forecourt and signage is bilingual, but buses meet only the major arrivals, so the wait can be anything from a few minutes to an hour. Check the seasonal timetable against your train before you book.

  3. Leg 2
    30min

    Iiyama Station to Madarao Kogen

Four winter buses a day are timed to Shinkansen arrivals — check the seasonal timetable against your train. Taxis (about ¥5,000, 30 min) run anytime, with no timetable to work around.

  4. Total
    2h 20m

Travel time, Tokyo to the resort

110 minutes from Tokyo to Iiyama by Shinkansen, then 30 minutes by bus or taxi to the resort — 2h 20m in total. With check-in, rental fitting and tickets on arrival, a morning train from Tokyo generally means an afternoon first run.

Other ways in

Haneda Airport
approx. 3.5–4h

Monorail and JR to Tokyo Station, then as above.

Narita Airport
approx. 4–4.5h

Narita Express to Tokyo Station, then as above.

Airport shuttle
winter only

Direct winter buses from Haneda and Narita, advance booking required.

By car
approx. 3.5h

Joshinetsu Expressway to Toyota-Iiyama IC, then about 20 minutes; allow longer in snowfall. Winter tyres or chains essential; free parking on site.

RESORT FACILITIES A–Z
Madarao is Direct-to-Lift. Bring your physical Ikon Pass and proceed directly to any lift gate—no ticket window or exchange is required. No advance reservations are required.
If your pass is still in the mail, please bring your Ikon Pass confirmation email along with a valid photo ID to the main ticket window. We can verify your pass status and issue your lift ticket.
No. The Ikon Pass covers Madarao Mountain Resort only. If you wish to ski the adjacent Tangram Ski Circus, please purchase a separate ticket valid for that day at Tangram Ski Circus.
Yes. Madarao is perfectly located for exploring the Nagano and Niigata areas. It sits close to Myoko Kogen, Nozawa Onsen, and Shiga Kogen, making it an excellent base for a powder-chasing road trip.
January and early February offer the most reliable deep powder conditions and the highest chance of consecutive storm cycles. However, our location often delivers heavy snowfall from late December right through early March.
Yes. The hotel front desk, ticket windows, rental shops and ski school all have English-speaking staff throughout the winter season. Trail signage, the piste map and the daily conditions board are bilingual.
Book a lesson with one of the two ski schools, either in advance or on arrival. Beginner terrain accounts for 30% of the mountain, and there is a free taster area for first-time snowboarders beside Lift 1. Equipment is available to rent.
Standard sets are not taken by reservation — come to the counter on the day and the staff will fit you. The Powder Station does take advance bookings for its powder skis and test models, which are limited in number, so book ahead if you have your eye on a particular pair.
Visa, Mastercard, JCB and American Express are accepted at the hotel, ticket windows, rental shops and all restaurants, alongside major IC cards and QR payment. There is an ATM accepting overseas cards in the hotel lobby.
All twelve courses are inside the resort boundary and patrolled. Enter only through the marked gates, only when the area is shown as open, and never alone. Areas may close at short notice for snow safety.
