Located at the base of Mt. Madarao, Madarao Kogen Hotel offers a cool respite in summer, and in winter becomes a ski resort area boasting the finest powder snow. The exceptional snow quality is unique in an area of Japan that is already well known for its snow depth. Due to its location, surrounded by the mountains of Madarao, Kurohime, Togakushi, Iizuna and Myoko at heights of 1,000 to 2,000 meters, and situated to the south of Lakes Nojiri and Nozomi, the area witnesses consistent falls of light, powder snow. This makes for a perfect powder season, and a special place for winter sports enthusiasts!

The area is also abounds in beautiful nature, which makes it a popular tourist and sightseeing destination. The ski resort provides you with a variety of courses for skiing and snowboarding, including tree runs, the Powder Line steep course, and the snow and free-ride parks. There are also free snowboard lessons for beginners. This is a perfect ski resort for families, where all members, from beginner to advanced, can have a great day out together.

In summer, various outdoor activities for all kinds of weather are available here in the highland, such as the Zipline Adventure area, which starts next to the hotel, as well as lots of other things to do in the ski area nearby. If the weather turns bad, there are indoor facilities for things like trampolining, table tennis, and badminton.

In spring, the Madarao Highlands are full of the sights and smells of nature. When the air is filled with the scents of fresh forest greenery, and the ground is dotted with new mountain vegetables sprouting amongst the remaining patches of snow, it’s definitely time to hit the Shin-etsu hiking trail. For foreign visitors who are not familiar with snow, Madarao Highlands offers amazing sights and experiences. Here in the great outdoors, spend some time around the majestic lakes while you take in the fresh air and the aroma of the forest. The misty world that unfolds in front you is fantastic! The green fields in this season are also something to cherish, the air full of the scent of budding flowers, and the ground a sea of yellow rape blossoms. The clear blue sky, fresh green, yellow rape blossoms, and pink cherry blossoms give an amazing and relaxing contrast in color.
In the harvest season, the area transforms in to a sea of golden paddy fields. Iiyama and Kijimadaira in particular are famous for producing some of the best Koshihikari rice in Japan. There is an abundant supply of clear and clean water, making for not only excellent rice but also quality sake. Delicious locally grown fruit and vegetables add to the appeal of the area.
